Barry Stacey birdied the 18th hole on Sunday afternoon to win the 2011 Grande Meadows Club Championship by one stroke over Matthew Hackett. Stacey carded a 79 on Sunday to go along with a 90 on Saturday for a two day total of 169 while Hackett, the co-leader from Saturday managed an 81 on Sunday to go along with Saturday's 89 for a two day total of 170. Perry Stone finished in third with a two day total of 173 with daily scores of 90 and 83.

Betty Walsh won the Ladies Division and her first Grande Meadows Ladies Championship with a two day total of 210 with daily scores of 110 and 100 while Judy Drake finished second with a 2 day total of 217 from scores of 116 and 101. Denisine Nolan won the Ladies Division Low Net with a two day total of 152.

Hackett won the A Division Low Gross with his 170 total while Charlie Loughlin won the A Division Low Net with a total of 146.

Frank Dober won the B Division Low Gross with a total of 183 while Glen Price won the B Division Low Net with a score of 149.

John Bugden won the C Division Low Gross with a 2 day score of 188 while Don Walsh's two day total of 144 won the C Division Low Net.

Special thanks go out to all those who helped out in any way in making the Club Championship a success. Especially we'd like to thank all those who pitched in on Sunday afternoon and took care of the scoring for all Divisions. One of the drawbacks of a shotgun start is that everybody finishes up pretty much at the same time so it makes for a hectic time in doing the scoring.  But with all the help things went off quite well. Cheers to all!!!

Saturday, September 10 2011 - Heather Drake Selected for Junior Female Development Team

Heather Drake, a 16 year old Grade 11 student at MCHS in Marystown has been selected to the provincial female development team which will form the nucleus of the players that will represent the province at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The team was selected at the end of a summer development camp held at Terra Nova Golf Resort recently.

The development team is the result of an evaluation process under taken by the NLGA to identify the players suited to participate in the Canada Summer Games. Drake joins 5 other young female golfers vying for one of 3 positions on the 2013 Canada Games team. Once selected the next step in the process is a comprehensive training and development program which will run over the course of the next 12 months including sessions on skill development, mental preparation, strength and conditioning , as well as nutrition and physical conditioning. In conjunction with that the program will also include several competitions during the 2012 season.

Drake has been playing golf for the past 12 years having been introduced to the game at a very young age by her father, Joe who is an avid golfer sporting a 10 handicap. Her mother Bride also golfs and has been instrumental in getting Heather to all her competitions throughout the summer. She has been a member of the Grande Meadows Junior program for the past 7 years and has competed at the Junior Ladies provincials for the past 4 years. The culmination of all her hard work was making the NL Provincial Junior Female team in 2010 and 2011 which gave her the right to compete in the Canadian Junior Female Championships in Sussex, NB and Richmond BC. Also Drake was the 2011 NL Juvenile Female Champions and after her return from Nationals Drake completed her Junior season by winning the 2011 Grande Meadows Junior Ladies Championship by one stroke over Deanna Moulton.

Drake says that she “Thoroughly enjoyed her experience at Nationals and was very impressed with the caliber of play from the girls competing there.” She especially liked the greens which were very slick and a little faster than what she had been used to. However, that being said her future goals in golf include making the Provincial Junior Ladies team for the 2 years she has left in the Junior program and making the 2013 NL Canadian Summer Games team. With her work ethic and her continued improvement those goals are well within her reach.

Heather who hopes to continue competing in golf after her junior days credits Provincial coach, Jim Stick with the improvements in her game over the past few years. He is very dedicated to the young girls and this year has made some minor changes to her swing to help her compete on the longer courses on the mainland. Drakes favourites golf courses on the island include Twin Rivers at Terra Nova and Gander Golf Club while her favourite course from off the island is the Sussex Golf and Curling Club in New Brunswick. As well with her hope to attend university after high school continued improvement in her golf game may lead to some scholarship offers there.

Thursday, September 8 2011 - Deanna Moulton 2010 NL Junior Ladies Champion

17 year old Deanna Moulton, a Grade 12 student at MCHS, won the 2011 NL Junior Ladies Championship this summer at the Wilds in Salmonier. The win was the culmination of 7 years of golfing in the Grande Meadows Junior Golf Program.

Moulton following in the footsteps of her older sister Shelley who won the Provincial Junior Ladies Championship in 2002 while finishing second in 2003 and 2004 has steadily progressed in her golf game and made the 2010 Provincial Junior Ladies team with a 3rd place finish before breaking through this year to capture her first provincial title. As well Deanna finished 5th in 2009 becoming the first Alternate on the Provincial Junior Ladies team. She credits her sister with getting her started in the game, her family for getting her to all the events over the past 7 years as well as Jim Stick, the provincial junior coach for helping her become the golfer that she is right now.  As well her parents Terry and Joyce have been great supporters of Deanna in getting her to her competitions all over the province and the mainland.

Moulton's list of accomplishments beside winning the 2010 Provincial Junior Ladies Championship include playing in the provincial juniors from 2007 – 2011, winning the Provincial Juvenile Championship in 2008 and 2009, winning the Junior Club championship in 2010, playing at Junior Nationals in 2010 and 2011, and playing at Junior Atlantics in 2011.

This year Moulton says “My scores haven't improved a big lot nor has her drives increased in length but it has been due to a swing change which my coach Jim Stick thinks will serve me best in the long run.” She goes on to say, “Jim tells me that it will be difficult for a while but once things click then I'll be that much better.” Moulton says “It has been a long summer with lots of travel but it has been worth it and she hopes to have a successful final junior year in 2012”.

Moulton can also be found around the golf course helping out with the younger golfers involved in the Junior program or the Future Links program at Grande Meadows. She feels she is giving back for some of the help she has gotten along the way. She also enjoys figure skating during the winter season and helping out with the coaching of the younger figure skaters although she doesn't take part in figure skating competitions.

Her future plans include going to university although she hasn't narrowed down to a particular program or university just yet but her marks in her high school courses will give her many options in the next year. Maybe she'll follow her sister, Shelley again and become a nurse.

As for future golf aspirations, Moulton hopes to make the 2012 Provincial Junior Ladies Team and then once she graduates from the junior program compete in the provincial Ladies Amateur in the years to come.

Her father, Terry has started a putting green behind their house which hopefully will be ready to use when the 2012 golf season begins. It will be a great asset to have her own area to practice putting and chipping. She lists Blomidon in Corner Brook as her favourite course to play in Newfoundland and Labrador while the Q Golf and Country Club in Richmond, BC would be her favourite course off the island.

Below is a little photo gallery of photos of Deanna along with Provincial Teammate Heather Drake during a golf outing at Grande Meadows recently. As well Deanna, is a bit of a budding artist as you can see from the picture below she drew while waiting to tee off. :-)
