Grande Meadows

Course Update

April 24, 2020

Hopefully this update finds everyone safe and in good health during the Covid-19 pandemic. A big shout out to all front line workers who are providing essential services during this chaotic time. Please continue to follow the practices of physical distancing regulations in the hope that we will be back to normal in the not too distant future. We are still optimistic that we will be able to begin our season for membership as budgeted on the Thursday before the long weekend for members.

As well we are aware that this pandemic will mean that changes will have be made in the way things are done around golf courses as well as other aspects of our lives. For instance it will mean cleaning of golf carts after each use among other things.

Check out a little information from the following provinces to see how they are dealing with re-opening.

Saskatchewan

British Columbia

New Brunswick  See Page 9 For Golf Specific Items

Prince Edward Island

Our fourth weekly update finds our greens and the fairways look excellent shape and hopefully we will be able to take advantages of the great course conditions soon. Myself, Board Chairperson Keith and General Manager Bill walked the course on Wednesday morning. It is our opinion that the course is in much better shape after the winter this year than last year.

Kim sent out the membership invoices this week and she is hearing back from members every day. We look forward to your continued membership and support of Grande Meadows golf course. As well we want to reiterate the fact that members can send an e-transfer to grandemeadows@nf.aibn.com. Kim's cell number is 567-0313.

As well Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a membership fee to any person who wasn't a member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal to contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

Even though the course isn't open for members to play golf you are welcome to walk the course to check out the conditions providing that the rules of social distancing are followed.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Grande Meadows

Course Update

April 17, 2020

Our third weekly update sees our course coming along very well with the greens in need of mowing in a very short time. Since golf courses were deemed non-essential last week Grande Meadows is waiting to hear if we are allowed to have somebody in to mow the greens. Golf NL still has no word back from the provincial government on whether we are allowed to carry out such maintenance. Several Grande Meadows Board members along with general manager Bill Lee participated in a Zoom meeting Wednesday morning with Golf NL along with representatives from the majority of golf courses on the island and in Labrador. Bill impressed upon Golf NL that we need to know asap as our course is in need of having the greens mowed in the next few days. Greg Hillier of Golf NL said he would do what he could do to have an answer by Friday.

Once we know what is happening with regards to our maintenance we will let you know by posting to our website.

The following three links will give you an idea of how things are progressing in other parts of the country during the Covid-19 crisis with regards to golf courses.

The original plan was to have Grande Meadows open for the season on May 14 for members and on the long weekend for non-members. With that in mind we are proceeding as if we will open at that time and will go ahead in the next few days to send out invoices for the 2020 season. As well the Board is looking into setting up e-transfers with our bank to allow members to pay fees using that method of payment.

As always there is lots of work going on behind the scenes to get things ready to go ahead with the course opening as soon as we get the go ahead. The Board and management are following up on different funding initiatives that have been put in place by the federal government to help not-for-profit group such as Grande Meadows to get though the difficult times we are experiencing at the moment. A couple of possible things we may qualify for include the 75% wage subsidies as well as a $40,000 interest free loan of which $10,000 of that would be forgivable if we meet certain conditions. If it's to our advantage we will avail of them for sure.

Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you out enjoying our lovely golf course in the not too distant future.

Cheers

Grande Meadows

Course Update

April 10, 2020

This is our second weekly update to membership for the 2020 golf season. The Board of Directors thought it would be a good idea to post regular weekly updates to the website. Check each Friday for the next while for an update to try and keep you up on what's happening with our golf course.

You are all aware of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 virus in Newfoundland, Canada and the world. So please stay safe and follow the principles of social distancing in the hope that this pandemic will be over sooner than later. We wish all of you a Happy Easter.

Bill says the course came out of the winter quite well. The greens and fairways seem to have wintered very well and there are very few trees down. Click the little pic to the left to see a photo of the green on Hole #7 taken by Edmund Antle last Sunday afternoon. Some people are going for a walk around the course checking it out. Please remember to practice social distancing as you do so. However, the course or the driving range is not open for anyone to use – see next paragraph.

Thursday morning, we received the official word from Golf NL that the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development through the Health Department that golf has been classified as a non-essential service and therefore is not permitted to open to the public. In light of this notice, Golf NL has sent the a letter to the Minister responsible for Sport to request consideration of allowing golf courses to provide maintenance activities. Golf NL has also sent the letter to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and contacted Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador to support their efforts on our part to seek approval for these activities. (Golf NL Letter to the Minister)

Some of our Board Members and Bill have taken part in a Webinar with Golf NL and there is another this coming Monday morning to update member courses around the province. Golf NL is also keeping an eye on the federal government initiatives and reporting back to the golf courses on appropriate courses of action.

In the meantime there is another Skype Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday April 15. We see that people are keeping in touch by social media including Skype or Zoom. Myself along with 3 of my golfing friends namely Bob Hoyles, Ches Cribb and Edmund Antle connected on Zoom on Thursday morning for a Virtual Coffee to replace our regular Thursday morning winter meeting at Tim Horton's. I guess now you could call us Zoom Boomers  or perhaps more appropriately Baby Zoomers. Ha! Ha!

Until next week: Did you hear that during a recent checkup Steve Douglas's doctor told him to play 36 holes a day, so he went out and bought a harmonica.

Cheers

Grande Meadows

Course Update

April 3, 2020

This is the first update to membership for the 2020 golf season. The Board of Directors thought it would be a good idea to post regular weekly updates to the website. Check each Friday for the next while for an update on what's happening.

You are all aware of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 virus in Newfoundland, Canada and the world. We don't know how this will play out over the coming months but the Board of Directors, for now, will proceed as if we will be going ahead as normal come mid-May. With that in mind on behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your membership in 2019. Our board is currently planning for the 2020 season and we are looking forward to your continued membership. The plan is to send out invoices to membership for the 2020 season in the next couple of weeks. Again things may change during that time so we will have to play it by ear.

The Board of Directors had a meeting on March 16 during which Keith Howse was elected Chairperson for the 2020 season. John Bugden was elected Vice Chairperson while Barry Stacey was elected Secretary/Treasurer. The remaining committees are posted to the Grande Meadows Website.

The next scheduled meeting was cancelled due to the current pandemic so a Skype meeting went ahead on April 1 with all board members as well as Bill and Kim participating.

Bill reported that 7 of the 9 greens at the course are now snow free and he figures they will need to be mowed around April 20.

The Board is diligently checking into some of the federal government programs for wage subsidies and interest free loans. At the moment not all criteria is in place but it should come together over the next few weeks. The Board has been in contact with Golf NL, ACOA as well as MHA Carol Ann Haley and MP Churence Rogers. Hopefully there will be some help there for us during these tough times. We will keep you posted.

During the past few weeks Jeannette Lundrigan has been diligently working at updating the email addresses for Grande Meadows members. She has done a fantastic job and is missing only contact for the following 6 members from last year. If you have an email address or a phone number for any of them could you please pass it along to Jeannette at jeannettelundrigan@gmail.com. It would be greatly appreciated.
