Grande Meadows

Course Update

May 29, 2020

Grande Meadows golf course has been open for two weeks now. The course has been fairly busy with a fair number of golfers hitting the fairways and greens each day. Once again things are picking up and all golfers are diligent in following the Covid-19 regulations in place. Please keep up the good work and we will hopefully be able to ease some restrictions when the province moves to Level 3 on June 8.

The following link provides some information on protocols put in place by PGA Atlantic to deal with suspected cases of Covid-19. Click here to see that information.

There are a number of IMPORTANT updates that Golf NL has provided to us at this time:

  1. The pulley ball retrieval system is permitted to be used as long as golfers are instructed on how to use the equipment at the 1st tee or prior to their round.

  2. As of June 8th members with restaurant facilities will be permitted to open under specific guidelines that are being developed by the Health department and should be posted in the coming days.

  3. As of June 8th retail outlets (ProShops) will be permitted to open, under specific guidelines which will be posted in the coming days

  4. As of June 8th members will be permitted to operate golf day camp activities again under specific guidelines to be posted shortly.

Some of the above activities will be activated under the Alert Level III and I have attached the alert level summary link for your review and reference. Alert Level Summary Link

Many of our members have signed up for RCGA Membership and have been inputting scores. So far we are happy to report that the majority of members inputting scores are using the Hole by Hole method and we would like to encourage other members to do likewise. Besides providing each golfer with some valuable information it will also provide the course with valuable data in seeing how the holes are playing difficulty wise.

Membership is coming along and we now have approximately 125 members including youth, student and 19 new members. However, there is still room for some more members so please encourage anyone you may know that is thinking of joining up.

Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a reduced membership fee to any person who was not an individual or corporate associate member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. There is also a reduced membership fee for youth 24 and under as well as full time students. Some people have taken advantage of those deals already. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

A shout out to Art Cluett who dinged the cup on Hole #3 with his tee shot last Saturday May 23. Unfortunately it can't be considered a hole-in-one but he did finish the hole with a big 1 on his scorecard. Way to go Art. Hopefully once the cups are lowered you will do it again.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Grande Meadows

Course Update

May 22, 2020

Grande Meadows golf course has been open for over a week now. With the great weather there have been a fair number of golfers hitting the fairways and greens each day. Management reports that everything is going well with very few glitches. All golfers are very diligent in following the Covid-19 regulations in place. Please keep up the good work and we will hopefully be able to ease some restrictions when the province moves to Level 3 on June 8.

There have been several inquiries as to the ZERO TOLERANCE policy in place regarding the Covid-19 guidelines and the consequences involved if there were breaches of these regulations. The following is a policy put in place by the Board of Directors at a recent meeting. This policy applies to members as well as public golfers.

This is to advise that Grande Meadows staff and members are monitoring your behavior and if a report is received regarding any violation you will be contacted by either golf captain , management and /or board of directors.

First violation: verbal warning including explanation of the guidelines.

Second violation: golfer informed to leave the premises immediately and is banned from Grande Meadows for 7 days.

Third violation: all golfing privileges suspended at Grande Meadows for remainder of 2020 season and no refunds provided.

Notwithstanding the above, anyone has the right to complete and submit a public health report form if they believe an individual or business is acting contrary to orders issues under the Public Health Protection And Promotions Act.

Click the address below to report an incident to authorities.

https://www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/public-report-form/

Many of our members have signed up for RCGA Membership and have been inputting scores. There is a new handicap program in place since January 1 and there are some changes to the program. You can check this out by going to the RCGA website. If you aren't sure of the changes you can check with Golf Captain Mike Russell. Mike suggests that the easiest way to avoid any issues with scores is to input your scores Hole By Hole and let the computer program make the necessary changes. As well Hole By Hole scores gives the course a better idea of how the different holes are playing with respect to difficulty.

Kudos to Bill and Peter for having the course in great shape for so early in the season. The tees & fairways are in mid season form and the greens are running great. Keep it up guys!

As well thanks go to our inside staff led by Kim who along with Crystal, Paula and Roxanne are getting used to the new normal in the clubhouse while keeping things running smoothly. Of course a big shout out to all the members for helping out by following the guidelines. At the same time we can't get too complacent and we must follow the guidelines set down by the Public Health Department.

Golf NL is in the process of putting together a set of what they call Best Practices to send to government for consideration as the province moves to Alert Level 3. Golf NL has reached out to all member golf courses for their input into this document which will be presented to government in the next week or so. Kudos to Golf NL President Ken Casey and Executive Director Greg Hillier for all their work on our behalf over the past few months.

Membership is coming along and we now have approximately 125 members including youth, student as wells as 19 new members. However, there is still room for some more members so please encourage anyone whom you may know that is thinking of joining up.

Kudos to long time member Bob Hoyles who carded a 1 under par score of 71 on Tuesday morning while playing alongside myself, Mike Russell and Boyd Roul. Hoyles shot 38 on the front 9 and 33 on the back 9. Included in the spectacular round was 5 birdies. It's great when one can shoot below his age for 18 holes on any course.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Grande Meadows

Golf got underway Thursday morning at Grande Meadows when Roy George Cluett(R) playing alongside Horatio Cluett (L) teed it up on Hole # 1 on a beautiful sunny and cool morning.

The first lady off the tee for the 2020 season was Jeannette Lundrigan(L) who was accompanied by Marilyn McCarthy (R).

As well on Thursday morning Grande Meadows member Stephen Douglas, retired Canadian Forces member raised the flags to half mast where they will remain for the weekend in honor of long time Grande Meadows Member Ivan Paul who passed away while on vacation in February. Rest In Peace, Ivan.

Grande Meadows is one of the first golf courses on the island to have opened for the season with the course in great shape after the winter. If the weather would warm up a bit hopefully the course will become busy. Even though the first day was cool and there weren't a lot of golfers those who did make it out for a round enjoyed being back on the course. Everyone followed the social distance guidelines and we thank you all for that.

This season will be a challenge especially with all the limited conditions to try and raise revenue to help pay expenses. Any chance you have to use the clubhouse whether it's to buy a pop, tea, coffee or some other item please do so. Your support will go a long way to making Grande Meadows a success.

In the meantime lots of work on behalf of members is happening behind the scenes to try and secure some funding including the small business loan guarantee and the wage subsidy introduced by the federal government. As well GM has applied for and received a JCP project for this summer. However, lots of work has to be done to complete the conditions to have it finalized. As well application has been made for summer students under the student summer jobs program. It is the hope that some or all of those will help us make it through this season.

Grande Meadows wants to show its appreciation to all our first responders and front line workers by offering discounted golf to those people from May 18 – 31. Details to come in the next couple of days. Junior golfers haven't been forgotten and an announcement is forthcoming in the next week regarding how junior golfers fit into the Grande Meadows golfing community.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Friday, May 8 2020 - Grande Meadows Golf Course Members Update May 8

Grande Meadows

Course Update

May 8, 2020

Hole # 7 taken Thursday morning May 7 by Bill Lee.

First of all a special Mothers Day wich to all our members who are moms as well as those moms who are the better half of our other members. Hope you have a great day on Sunday and everyday.

The good news is that we will be able to golf at Grande Meadows on Thursday May 14 which was our originally scheduled first day of golf for 2020. Thursday is for members only and the course will open to the public on Friday May 15. You may call the clubhouse on Wednesday after 9:00am to book a tee time.

However, we will be opening up under some different conditions from which we have become accustomed.

The Board is in the process of putting together a memo to send by email to all 2019 and 2020 members to date by Monday evening or Tuesday detailing some of the guidelines we have put in place in order to get our season started. We know you will have many questions just as we do but at the moment we do not have all the answers. Please be patient and considerate of your fellow golfers as we navigate through some rough times.

What follows today are some general things to expect when you come to play golf this year. We remind everyone that we are operating under protocols put in place by the Provincial Government and we must obey these guidelines or risk the possibility of losing the privilege to play golf. See the provincial guidelines as well as the Golf NL recommendations by clicking the links below.

Provincial Government Guidelines  Note: 3 amendments to be made to those guidelines soon. They are regarding rental of pull carts, on course washrooms and tee time intervals.

Golf NL Recommendations

Grande Meadows will begin the season with 12 minute tee times beginning at 8:00am and ending at 6:00pm with back 9's scheduled for 2 hours. If this works well it may be possible to reduce those tee times as well as changing the starting time. Hopefully we will learn as we go and be able to improve. According to Government of NL regulations we have to keep distancing on the course so there will be no playing through. If you are playing by yourself or in a group of 2 or 3 golfers you cannot catch up to the group in front of you. You will have to pace yourself accordingly so that there is no more than one foursome at a tee box and one foursome group a green.

You must book a tee time as by government regulation there will be no walk-ons. We cannot stress that enough so please call ahead and book your time. If at all possible we suggest you book a foursome but it is not mandatory but it may eliminate some frustrations with having to wait for the group in front of you.

You are allowed to use your scores for handicap purposes if you have signed up with the RCGA. As a result of the Covid-19 crisis the RCGA has made temporary adjustments to the rules which allow golfers to use scores even if they do not hole out according to The Rules of Golf. Check the link below to read their explanation.

RCGA Handicap Covid-19 Guidelines

As you know our course has struggled financially the past few years and this year looks like it may be a continuation of that struggle as we are beginning the season with no pro shop, bar, tournaments, Men's Night, or Ladies Night as well as limited canteen facilities with curb side pick up only. As well you cannot use cash to pay at the clubhouse – it has to be debit or credit card.

As well Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a reduced membership fee to any person who was not an individual or corporate associate member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. There is also a reduced membership fee for youth 24 and under as well as full time students. Some people have taken advantage of those deals already. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

Even though the course isn't open for members to play golf you are welcome to walk the course to check out the conditions providing that the rules of social distancing are followed.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Monday, May 4 2020 - Gov't Guidelines for Golf Reopening

Government Guidelines for Golf Courses

The Provincial Government released its guidelines for golf courses to follow when reopening next week. The government released these guidelines without input from Golf NL although Golf NL requested a meeting with government officials to discuss such guidelines. Click the link below to see those guidelines.

Newfoundland Guidelines for Golf Courses

Golf NL Executive Director Greg Hillier has responded with a letter to Dr. Haggie and Premier Ball to request that they would change the tee time guideline to 12 minute intervals instead of the present 20 minute interval. I will keep you posted here on any changes.

At least we will be able to play golf next week.

Friday, May 1 2020 - Grande Meadows Golf Course Members Update May 1

Grande Meadows

Course Update

May 1, 2020

I would think that everyone has heard the news by now that golf courses in Newfoundland will be allowed to open in May so our that fits in well with Grande Meadows targeted opening date of May 14 for members and May 15 for non-members. We will, however, operate under certain restrictions. Golf NL in conjunction with its member golf courses have been working on and will continue to work on guidelines for opening. I would assume Golf NL in conjunction with the provincial government as well as Chief Medical Officer Dr. Janice Fitzgerald will finalize those guidelines in the not too distant future. I will endeavor to pass those along here as soon I receive them.

There are many questions we cannot answer for you right now as we don't know which guidelines will be in place. For instance Dr. Fitzgerald said today in her remarks that clubhouses will not allowed to be open. We will have to figure out going forward what that means to us. So questions about whether tee times will be 10, 12, 15 minutes or more apart will have to wait until the guidelines are set. Suffice to say that golf as we have become accustomed to at Grande Meadows will see a few changes as we get used to the so called “new normal”.

We are hoping that this new information will serve as an impetus for members to pay up their membership fees as soon as they are able. I want to remind you that e-transfer is available by sending your fees to grandemeadows@nf.aibn.com. You can also reach out to Kim at 567-0313. As well of course fees can be mailed to Grande Meadows Golf Course, P. O. Box 80, Frenchman's Cove, NL A0E 1R0. You can check with Kim at the email above or by phone to see when she will be at the golf course.

As well over the next while we will check into setting up online tee times at Grande Meadows. If done it will have to be through the Fore System in place at the clubhouse through a link on the Grande Meadows webpage. I will report back next week if we have anything figured out in that regard.

As well Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a reduced membership fee to any person who was not an individual or corporate associate member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal to contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

Even though the course isn't open for members to play golf you are welcome to walk the course to check out the conditions providing that the rules of social distancing are followed.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers
