Grande Meadows

Course Update

June 26, 2020

Happy 25th Birthday Grande Meadows

Grande Meadows for recently celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary of opening. The years have passed by fairly quickly and the course has matured into one of the finest tests of golf in Newfoundland. Grande Meadows is know for it’s narrow fairways, thick rough and quick greens. You don’t have to be long off the tee but you had better be straight or you will have your work cut out for you trying to make par on any of the holes. The course becomes even more challenging when you add in wind which happens most days at Grande Meadows Golf Course. Below are the links to a few photos taken throughout the years of the area of Frenchman’s Cove where Grande Meadow is located.

Golf NL Update

The following update came from Golf NL Executive Director Greg Hillier who visited our course this past Monday.

REMINDER: 2020 Welcome Kit and Card Distribution

As we continue to enhance our digital platforms to provide members with a more convenient and seamless digital experience, Golf Canada is pleased to introduce a digital membership card that will be available through the Golf Canada Score Centre beginning Spring 2020.

To further reduce person-to-person touch points, we are eliminating the bulk delivery of the physical Welcome Kit to golf clubs in 2020. These kits will still be available for home delivery, but only on an “as-requested” basis by individual members. Golf Canada will no longer be facilitating bulk deliveries to clubs. Individual members can request home delivery of their membership package through their Score Centre profile on Golf Canada’s website.

Benefits of a Digital Membership Card

  • Instantaneous delivery of the digital Membership Card and PDF Welcome Kit booklet upon sign-up or renewal of membership – the membership card will be located within the Golf Canada Mobile Application and Golf Canada Score Centre

  • Environmentally friendly nature of moving away from plastic and paper membership packages

  • Ability to display the digital membership card and handicap record on mobile devices thru the Golf Canada Mobile App for golf related travel where valid handicap verification is required

  • Flexibility and convenience – control the clutter with no more paper – all membership benefits are now located within the Golf Canada Mobile Application or Score Centre

  • Elimination of the risk of losing or misplacing Golf Canada Membership cards

  • Less human handling of membership cards and welcome kit packages to protect against transmission of COVID-19 and other potential illnesses

If you have any questions about the introduction of the Digital Membership package, please contact our customer service team at 1.800.263.0009 x399 or members@golfcanada.ca.

  • Note: Individual home delivery of membership packages will be available until October 31st, 2020.

Please note that the Grande Meadows clubhouse and proshop are open for shopping.

RCGA Membership Information

The majority of our members who have the RCGA Membership have been inputting scores using the Hole by Hole method. This week I will provide some information here on how the stats can be looked at as well as interpreted.

Number or Rounds Entered to RCGA Site

The following table shows the number of rounds entered into the RCGA site by both ladies and men as well as the tees from which they were entered.

Hole Rating For This Season

The use of the hole by hole scoring by members gives us an idea of how difficult each hole is playing for the season. Each hole is now rated for the Ladies and Men on the GM Scorecard. This rating was done last year based partly on information obtained from past years data from members inputting their scores hole by hole. Below is a link to how the holes are ranked on the scorecard as well as how the holes are playing during the 2020 season for each tee.

Did the raised cup make golf easier? Check out the link below to check out what the data says!

Raised Cup

This week's shoutout goes to defending Men's Club Champion and Invitational Champion Matthew Hackett of his superb round of 68 on Saturday June 13. While playing in a group with Paul Hartson, Perry Stone and Sam Warren, Matthew carded a 35 on the front 9 to go along with a 33 on the back for one of the finest rounds ever played at Grande Meadows. During this fabulous round Matthew hit 18 of 18 greens in regulation. Congratulations Matthew. By the way this round was played on what would have been Day 1 of the 2020 GM Invitational if Covid-19 hadn't happened.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Grande Meadows

Course Update

June 12, 2020

We are now 4 days into Alert Level 3 and things are progressing well at the course. Lots of members and public golfers are getting out to enjoy the lovely course conditions. As well we are a week into the new lever system for taking the golf ball from the hole and indications are that all golfers are liking it compared to the raised cup.

The Board of Directors and management would like to thank all golfers for diligently following the Covid-19 regulations in place. Please keep up the good work. Check out the following link to monitor the public health guidance regarding Outdoor Recreation Activities from the Department of Health and Community Services. Check back regularly as the situation can change frequently and the site is updated daily.

Outdoor Recreation Activities

The Men's Night Committee would like to inform members that they are hoping to begin Men's Night after Alert Level Two if they are able.

Golf NL has decided to cancel all of its programs for the 2020 season. Executive Director Greg Hillier of Golf NL says, “It is with mixed emotions that I have to inform you that Golf NL has decided to cancel all of its programs for the 2020 season. Taking into consideration the health and well-being of our athletes, staff, volunteers, host club, partners and other stakeholders, the Board of Directors of Golf NL unanimously decided to cancel the remainder of the 2020 Provincial Development Team program, 2020 Provincial Championships and the 2020 Tely Junior Tour.

The decision to cancel these events were not taken lightly, but given the present restrictions regarding competitions, evaluation of the risk associated with hosting the events, ability to migrate and manage these risks and the ability to host quality events, activities and “first class” championships we believe this is the best course of action. The safety and well-being of our coaching staff, development team players, championships competitors, tournament staff and volunteers along with our host site members and staff are the main priority for Golf NL.

While golf leads itself to accommodate social distancing, there are many other factors to take into consideration when reviewing our organization's ability to safety host activities and events.”

It is with regret that we have had to cancel the 23rd Annual Grande Meadows Invitational Golf Tournament. However, due to Covid-19 guidelines in place there wasn't time to organize the tournament at this time. That doesn't mean that at some time later this summer or early fall we wouldn't make an attempt to try and make that happen. There is some interest from many of our visiting golfers from St. John's and Stephenville who would like to attend. Of course there are many factors to consider including such things as what other tournaments may be scheduled at Grande Meadows as well as at other courses around the island.

Tree Growing Out of a Tree

Just wondering who has noticed the two dwarf Alberta Spruce trees growing in front of the clubhouse. I passed by those trees every time I took my golf clubs from my locker but never noticed what looks like a tree growing out of a tree. It was pointed out to me by one of our members. As well he pointed me to a website which explains what is happening here.

It's a process called genetic reversion whereby the dwarf tree reverts back to its original form. I won't try to explain it here but if you check out the link below it will be explained.

I thought those of you who haven't noticed – and there are many – might find it interesting.

The majority of our members who have the RCGA Membership have been inputting scores using the Hole by Hole method. Please try to encourage your fellow golfers who are inputting scores to use this method. Next week I will provide some information here on how the stats can be looked at as well as interpreted.

Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a reduced membership fee to any person who was not an individual or corporate associate member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. There is also a reduced membership fee for youth 24 and under as well as full time students. Some people have taken advantage of those deals already. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

A big shout out to Golf Captain Mike Russell who this past Saturday June 6 carded a great round of 73. Included in that round was a hole out for an eagle on Hole #4 and 3 birdies. Mike used his 9 iron to hole out from 132 yards. Great round Michael!

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Grande Meadows

Course Update

June 5, 2020

Things have been going really well since opening on May 14. There have been lots of golfers out during that time and green fees are up compared to the same time last year. The weather the past week hasn't been great but it's nice to see lots of unfamiliar faces out for some recreation and enjoyment.

The course is in fantastic shape and the rain the past week has turned everything green. It's also made the rough a little thick which makes for some tough shots into the wind. However, I find the rough similar to the sand. And as I have found out many times the best way to deal with sand and deep rough is to avoid it. Not so easy sometimes, eh! It just feels good to be out playing golf on a course that is in great shape.

The Board of Directors and management would like to thank all golfers for diligently following the Covid-19 regulations in place. Please keep up the good work. You can review the updated guidelines from the provincial government as we move to Alert Level 3 this coming Monday June 8.

Updated Provincial Golf Guidelines for Alert Level 3

Keith Howse, Club Chairperson, has been working on a pulley ball retrieval system to be used instead of having the raised cups as we do right now. There are various other methods out there that allow putting without the raised cup including pool noodles, pvc pipe and disk. Just click the links below to see each one. Suffice to say that we will have one of these in place for you to try out in the next few days. Please feel free to pass along your thoughts to management, the golf captain, the Board of Directors or to any other golfers.

The majority of our members have the RCGA Membership and have been inputting scores using the Hole by Hole method. We would like to encourage other members to do likewise. Besides providing each golfer with some valuable information about their own game it will also provide the course with valuable data in seeing how the holes are playing difficulty wise.

Membership is coming along and we now have approximately 134 members paid up including 8 youth, 8 student and 21 new members. However, there is still room for some more members so please encourage anyone you may know that is thinking of joining up.

Grande Meadows Golf Course is offering a reduced membership fee to any person who was not an individual or corporate associate member of Grande Meadows Golf Course in 2019 of $500.00 plus HST which includes RCGA membership. If you know of any person who would like to take advantage of this deal contact Kim at 567-0313 or Bill at 277-1101.

This week we would like to send a big shoutout to our ladies contingent of golfers who are out every good day enjoying themselves on the golf course. One of those ladies is Dorothy Warren who looks forward to getting over to Frenchman's Cove to get in a game. Dorothy, like her late husband Ray, will go out in just about any weather although she isn't too partial to rain. Dorothy, it is always great to see your lovely smile every time you are at the golf course.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry
