Grande Meadows

Course Update

July 31, 2020

Another month comes to an end and Grande Meadows is a busy spot with plenty of golfers out enjoying the great weather and golf conditions.

We'll Pay For Your Play In 2021

Grande Meadows has started a promotion for the remainder of the season whereby one person gets the opportunity to have his/her membership paid for the 2021 golf season. Every green fee paying non-member will get a ballot each time that person pays to play at Grande Meadows for the remainder of the 2020 season.

Grande Meadows Tournament Committee Report

After a successful B. P. Open Tournament this past weekend the Tournament Committee is in the process of organizing a couple of more tournaments including a Best Ball Tournament in August and the 23rd Annual Grande Meadows Invitational Golf Tournament from September 11 – 13. The Invitational was originally scheduled to take place from June 12 – 14 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Further details will be available soon on the Grande Meadows website and social media sites.

Men's Night

Men's Night continues to be very popular among male golfers with over 30 players coming out every Thursday evening to enjoy a round with fellow members. This year golfers book their own tee times from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. There is a different game each night as well as a 50/50 draw.

13th Annual Burin Peninsula Open Golf Tournament

47 golfers teed it up on a beautiful morning Saturday July 25. Matthew Hackett captured his first B. P. Open title with a solid round of 75 to win by 3 strokes over defending champion Perry Stone. Rachel Day carded a score of 97 to win her first Ladies title as well by one stroke over Jennifer Nolan who shot 98. Ches Cribb won the Men's Competitive Division 2 by one stroke over Bob Banfield as his 79 bested Banfield's 80. Art Cluett captured the Men's Senior Division 1 with a score of 88 to win by 1 stroke over Ben Grandy and Brad Russell who both carded 89's. Bill Buffett won the Men's Senior Division 2 with an 89 while Terry White's 96 placed him second.

All golfers who came out had a great day with many positive comments regarding Grande Meadows first tournament of the season. Below is a comment from Stuart MacGillivray of Bally Haly who was playing Grande Meadows for the first time Saturday.

Hi Barry,

I just wanted to thank you once again for such a great time Saturday. It was my first time at Grande Meadows and it certainly won't be my last. From the moment I stepped out of my car, Matthew passed by and introduced himself (which caught myself and my fiance right off guard!) and then walking to the practice green another gentleman approached me and asked if I was MacGillivray and came up to have a great chat. There are so many kind people at your club. The group I played with of Matthew, Perry, and Deon were excellent to me and I had so much fun. The course is in immaculate condition and very enjoyable to play. I'm looking forward to playing it again now that I'm a bit more familiar with it! I appreciate everything you did to coordinate things right down to the Grande Meadows ball divot tool and marker you attached to my draw prize.

Thanks again and looking forward to seeing you and the club again soon!

Stuart

Please note that the Grande Meadows Clubhouse and Pro Shop are open for shopping and Mulligans Restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday. Check the Grande Meadows website for open times and the menu.

This week's shoutout goes to Sam Myles who at age 93 is still over fishing for golf balls in the areas around Holes #6, 7, 8 and 9. It is indeed great to see Mr. Myles row his little boat up and down the shoreline with his little dip net over the side waiting to spot a wayward shot by some golfer. Congratulations Sam! Keep it up.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Grande Meadows

Course Update

July 24, 2020

Grande Meadows Golf Course continues to see an increase in activity during some great weather over the past summer.

General Manager Bill Lee and his outside crew have their work cut out for them these days as the main fairways mower is broken down which puts a big strain on our second mower. It means extra work for the staff to keep the course in great shape during this dry spell. So far they are doing a great job. Hopefully they will get the issue fixed soon. Keep up the good work Bill, Peter, Cassie and Greg.

Junior Golf

Junior golf goes Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 am while Future Links goes Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 pm. Junior registration has doubled this year to 36 young golfers while Future Links has 18 young children learning the basics of golf. If anyone would like to volunteer to help out on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings please call Junior Co-ordinator Eric Evans at the Clubhouse at 826-2600, Stan McCarthy at 277-4566 or John Bugden at 891-1744.

Men's Night

Men's Night has been very popular again this year as over 30 golfers are coming out every Thursday evening to enjoy a round with fellow members. This year golfers book their own tee times from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. There is a different game each night as well as a 50/50 draw. Kudos go out to the Men's Night Organizing Committee for the great job they do in having each night run very smoothly.

13th Annual Burin Peninsula Open Golf Tournament

The 13th Annual Burin Peninsula Open Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday July 25. A full field of 48 golfers are taking part with tee times beginning at 8:00am. After the round players will enjoy a lunch and a beverage followed by a presentation of awards in 2 Men's Competitive Divisions, 2 Senior Men's Divisions as well as a Ladies Division. Click here for tee times for Saturday.

Annual Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament

It is with regret that the BPHC Foundation has cancelled the annual golf tournament which was scheduled for Saturday September 12. It has been an annual affair for many years with upwards of 200 participants each year but with concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic the Foundation thought it would be better to cancel the tournament for this year. Hopefully things will ease and the tournament will go ahead in 2021.

Please note that the Grande Meadows clubhouse and Pro Shop are open for shopping and Mulligans Restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday. Check the Grande Meadows website for open times and the menu.

This week's shoutout goes to Walter Stapleton who recorded an eagle on July 14 by holing out from 150 yards on the Par 5 5th hole. Stapleton has renewed a membership this year after a few years off. Congratulations Walter!

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry

Grande Meadows

Course Update

July 2, 2020

For someone looking for a game of golf perhaps this lovely photo taken by Vic Lundrigan of Hole #7 on Saturday June 27 will entice you to come to Grande Meadows for the breathtaking views as well as the challenging golf.

The website weekly update is a day early this week as the “old blogger” is going to be away for a few days so there will be no update next week but it will be back for it's regular day Friday July 17.

Members are asked to note that it will no longer be considered a violation of the guidelines to allow someone behind you to play through your group. Just remember to please move off to the side to allow plenty of distance for the golfers to pass through.

The month of June proved to be a busy one for Grande Meadows with many good signs that golf is on bit of an upswing this season including an increase in the number of public golfers out for a round. Grande Meadows is looking at an increase in the number of member golfers across the board this year with a total of 156 member golfers which is up about 10 from last year. This year's members include 104 returning from last year, 29 new members, 10 youth members and 13 student members. As well this year there has been an increase in junior golfers registered from 18 to 32.

Junior Golf

Junior golf will be starting Thursday July 2 at 9 am while Future Links starts Monday July 6 at 5 pm. Junior registration is almost doubled this year while Future Links registration is still open. If anyone would like to volunteer to help out on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings please call Eric at the Clubhouse at 826-2600, Stan McCarthy at 277-4566 or John Bugden at 891-1744.

Men's Night

Men's Night will begin tonight Thursday July 2. The first 2 Men's Nights will be individual golf from the forward tees with the Hi/Low format deciding the winners. As well the regular 50-50 will take place each Men's Night. The committee is collecting $40 from each golfer to begin the year with the fee each night being $5 for golf and $2 for 50-50. Golfers who wish to may etransfer the money to John Bugden at poppyjohn2017@hotmail.com. If some people do not want to use this method you could give your money to Golf Captain Mike Russell at the course any day.

Golf Course Maintenance

Here's a link to an eye opening article about what it costs to maintain a golf course for a year. If one reads this Golf.com article you will become aware of some of the challenges Grande Meadows has in trying to make sure that conditions are top notch. If one reads it perhaps next time someone complains about slow play, the speed of the green, the length of time to play a round or the condition of the rough that person could reccomend this article to him/her. Click below.

How Much Does It Take To Maintain A Golf Course For A Year

This week's shoutout goes to our very capable outside staff who under the direction of General Manager Bill Lee has kept the course in fantastic condition during this difficult time. A very big thank you to Peter Myles, Cassie Marshall and Greg Farrell for going over and above to give us the great playing conditions we have experienced at Grande Meadows this golfing season. Here's Cassie raking the practice bunker on the driving range.

All the best and stay safe.

Cheers

Barry
