The first Randy Douglas Memorial Golf tournament was held on Friday August 5 at Grande Meadows Golf Course. Randy was an avid golfer and member of Grande Meadows who passed away suddenly last October. The tournament which was a 9 Hole Best Ball format with teams of 5 golfers was hosted by Randy's family members and over 90 golfers turned out for a very successful event.
The Douglas family donated a lovely bench with Randy's picture on it to Grande Meadows Golf Course to be used on Hole #3. It will get lots of use during best ball tournaments which were a favourite of Randy's. The family also had a trophy made up for the occasion which holds Randy's favourite golf club, his beloved “5 Wood”. The tournament winners names will be engraved on the trophy. After the 9 hole best ball format tournament three teams were tied with scores of 5 under par which resulted in teams going to a sudden death playoff on Hole #9. Team One consisted of Mike Russell, Perry Stone, Frank Haskell and Joey Smallwood while Team Two was made up of Richard Kelly, Barry Stacey, Eldon Roul and Harold from Dynamic Air Shelters . Team Three golfers were Jim Farewell, Ben Grandy, George Bennett, Cyril Abbott and Cecil Trimm. Teams One and Two managed to par the playoff hole while Team #3 bogeyed and were eliminated.
Teams One and Two went to a second tiebreaker where each team member had a shot at the green from 100 yards out with the closest to the hole being the winner. After shots were made Mike Russell edged out Barry Stacey by a couple of feet to secure the win for his team.
