17 year old Deanna Moulton, a Grade 12 student at MCHS, won the 2011 NL Junior Ladies Championship this summer at the Wilds in Salmonier. The win was the culmination of 7 years of golfing in the Grande Meadows Junior Golf Program.

Moulton following in the footsteps of her older sister Shelley who won the Provincial Junior Ladies Championship in 2002 while finishing second in 2003 and 2004 has steadily progressed in her golf game and made the 2010 Provincial Junior Ladies team with a 3rd place finish before breaking through this year to capture her first provincial title. As well Deanna finished 5th in 2009 becoming the first Alternate on the Provincial Junior Ladies team. She credits her sister with getting her started in the game, her family for getting her to all the events over the past 7 years as well as Jim Stick, the provincial junior coach for helping her become the golfer that she is right now.  As well her parents Terry and Joyce have been great supporters of Deanna in getting her to her competitions all over the province and the mainland.

Moulton's list of accomplishments beside winning the 2010 Provincial Junior Ladies Championship include playing in the provincial juniors from 2007 – 2011, winning the Provincial Juvenile Championship in 2008 and 2009, winning the Junior Club championship in 2010, playing at Junior Nationals in 2010 and 2011, and playing at Junior Atlantics in 2011.

This year Moulton says “My scores haven't improved a big lot nor has her drives increased in length but it has been due to a swing change which my coach Jim Stick thinks will serve me best in the long run.” She goes on to say, “Jim tells me that it will be difficult for a while but once things click then I'll be that much better.” Moulton says “It has been a long summer with lots of travel but it has been worth it and she hopes to have a successful final junior year in 2012”.

Moulton can also be found around the golf course helping out with the younger golfers involved in the Junior program or the Future Links program at Grande Meadows. She feels she is giving back for some of the help she has gotten along the way. She also enjoys figure skating during the winter season and helping out with the coaching of the younger figure skaters although she doesn't take part in figure skating competitions.

Her future plans include going to university although she hasn't narrowed down to a particular program or university just yet but her marks in her high school courses will give her many options in the next year. Maybe she'll follow her sister, Shelley again and become a nurse.

As for future golf aspirations, Moulton hopes to make the 2012 Provincial Junior Ladies Team and then once she graduates from the junior program compete in the provincial Ladies Amateur in the years to come.

Her father, Terry has started a putting green behind their house which hopefully will be ready to use when the 2012 golf season begins. It will be a great asset to have her own area to practice putting and chipping. She lists Blomidon in Corner Brook as her favourite course to play in Newfoundland and Labrador while the Q Golf and Country Club in Richmond, BC would be her favourite course off the island.

Below is a little photo gallery of photos of Deanna along with Provincial Teammate Heather Drake during a golf outing at Grande Meadows recently. As well Deanna, is a bit of a budding artist as you can see from the picture below she drew while waiting to tee off. 🙂
