Hackett & Kenway win BP Open

Matthew Hackett defeated Mike Russell on the first playoff hole to win his second straight BP Open Men’s Division Saturday. Both golfers finished the round with identical scores of 75. Both Hackett and Russell made the turn tied at 38 for the front 9 and stayed tied until Hole #17 when Hackett birdied while Russell bogeyed giving Hackett a 2 stroke lead with 1 hole to play. Russell parred the 18th while Hackett got into a little trouble and double bogeyed giving both golfers 37 on the back 9 and a final total of 75. On to the sudden death playoff where Hackett parred Hole #1 while Russell bogeyed making Hackett a 2 time winner of the B. P. Open.

Deon Grandy of Grande Meadows carded a fine round of 77 to finish in 3rd place while there was a 3 way tie for 4th place coming from Perry Stone of Grande Meadows, Matt Simmons of the Wilds and Aaron Wagner from the Avalon Peninsula.

Debbie Kenway shot an 89 to win the Ladies Division by 1 stroke over Jennifer Moulton who carded a 90. Kenway shot a fine front 9 of 43 to take a 2 stroke lead over Moulton’s 45 after the front 9. Moulton hung in there to shoot another 45 on the back 9 while Kenway came in with a back 9 score of 46 to give her the 1 stroke victory. Former BP Open Ladies winner Judy Drake was alone in 3rd after carding a round of 94.

Gary Smith captured the Men’s B Division shooting a great round of 79 which included 37 on the back 9. Smith won by 3 strokes over Glen Price and Ches Cribb who both finished with rounds of 82. Finishing in 4th place was Glen Forsey with an 85 while first time tournament competitor Zack Stone was 1 shot back with an 86.

Eric Ayers fired a great round of 85 to win the C Dvision by 5 strokes over Derek Button of Torbay and Carl Brown of Grande Meadows who both ended the day with rounds of 90. Rick Bolt finished in 4th place with a round of 93.

It was a great day weather wise and the competition was great as well with 60 golfers competing in the 4 divisions.

Special thanks go out to sponsors NL Power, Aylwards Home Hardware, Marystown Home Heat, John’s Refrigeration, Molson Brewery and Dan Walsh for their continued support of the Burin Peninsula Open. As well thanks go out to the inside and outside staff of Grande Meadows for all their hard work to make things work for us. A word of thanks to Bob Banfield and Golf Captain Mike Russell for helping out with marking the course and the rules. And we can’t forget our volunteers who helped out with registration, scoring, skins and prizes. Kudos to all.

The 14th Annual Burin Peninsula Open Golf Tournament is set to go Saturday July 24 with almost 60 golfers taking part. Defending Men’s Champion Matthew Hackett is set to defend his title but he will have some stiff competition from local golfers Deon Grandy, Ray & Deon Walsh along with several golfers from the Avalon Peninsula including Cory Gulliver & George Janes of Pitcher’s Pond Golf Course as well as Aaron Wagner who plays on the Avalon Peninsula and is a scratch golfer while Matt Simmons out of the Wilds Golf Course in Salmonier comes in with a 1 handicap. It should make for a very interesting BP Open.

2020 Ladies Champion Rachel Day will have her hands full trying to defending her title such challengers Debbie Kenway, Judy Drake, Jennifer Nolan and Tracey Blagdon coming after her. It should be quite a competitive Ladies event.
