2022 Recap
Grande Meadows has come through it’s 28th golf season with one of the warmest summers and fall on record. Golfers got to enjoy typical mainland weather throughout the whole golf season. Kudos go out to the greens keeping staff on doing a wonderful job under such abnormal conditions for us as there was lots of sunshine and little rain. Our greens were impeccable throughout the whole summer and while the fairways were a little brown at times it wasn’t the fault of the workers who are to be commended on the job they did this summer.
As well kudos go out to the inside staff who maintained their composure and kept things moving this summer. Besides their regular daily duties they were very helpful with the various committees including the Tournament Committee, Men’s Night & Ladies Night Committees as well as with various other groups who held tournaments throughout the summer. All the best to both the inside and outside workers and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2023.
Tournament play began in June with the Annual Invitational in which Mike Blagdon of Grande Meadows won the Men’s Title. This year Tracy Blagdon was the only lady playing this year and competed in the Men’s C Division where she finished 4th and was declared the Ladies Champion.
Sam Warren captured the Burin Peninsula Open Men’s title with a score of 76 while Tracey Blagdon’s 98 was good enough to win the Ladies B. P. Open title.
Matthew Hackett won his 6th Grande Meadows Men’s Club Championship while Judy Drake won her 10th Grande Meadows Ladies Club Championship in September.
Perry Stone captured the 2022 Match Play Championship by going through the summer undefeated in his matches and defeating Calvin Brenton 2 UP in the final.
James Mitchell defeated Kevin Power on the first playoff hole to win the Grande Meadows Junior Men’s Championship while Brooke Evans won the Junior Ladies Title for the first time.
The very first ever Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of deceased members was held in August with over 70 golfers participating in a best ball tournament. It is hoped to make the tournament an annual affair and it was great to see so many family members of deceased golfers come out and take part not only in the golf but in the little presentation held afterwards. Included in the presentation were members of Ivan Paul’s family including his mother, nieces and his great- nephew, Jackson Boland who participated in the tournament. The winning team in the tournament included Jordan Baird, Gus Keating, Trevor Keating, James Mitchell & Perry Stone.
The tournament season concluded with the Annual Fall Fest Tournament in early October with John Bugden & Judy Drake taking home first place.
Again this year Men’s Night and Ladies Night were held each week and proved to be very well attended. As a matter of fact this was the most successful season ever for Men’s Night with an average of 35 participants each Thursday evening. It was capped off by the Men’s Night Finale in late September.
Craig Hiscock, Bill Warren and George Rose became members of the Hole-in-one club at Grande Meadows this past season as all 3 scored their first career aces. Hiscock & Warren aced Hole #3 while Rose carded his ace on Hole # 7.
Kudos to all volunteers involved in making the 2022 season a successful one.
