Sunday, April 18 2021 - Tribute To Kevin Carvery

Tribute to Kevin Carvery

Barry Stacey

Grande Meadows lost a very good friend with the passing of Kevin Carvery on Friday April 16. Kevin was a member of Grande Meadows Golf Course for many years and was a fixture around many course events especially Men's Nights and tournaments.

I first met Kevin a long time ago while he worked at South Coast Printers and I would go in looking for something printed for one of the sports groups I was involved with. Of course you first met Gayanne and once you explained what you needed done sometimes she would have to bring Kevin out to see if it was possible. He was a really nice person who was always eager to help out and make a suggestion.

I got to know Kevin much better when he became a member of Grande Meadows Golf Course and over the ensuing years of playing golf with him and socializing at the course I am proud to call Kevin a good personal friend.

I think God put Kevin on this earth to make people smile and laugh. He certainly did that for all of us at Grande Meadows Golf Course. Whether he was regaling us with stories of him growing up in the Halifax area or telling us tales of his fishing exploits in Florida or in the back country of Newfoundland with his brother-in-law Jim Wiscombe, he always had an audience. He never had any tall fishing tales as he made no bones about the fact that he wasn't a very good fisherman. However, I know that the odd time he would get lucky as I was the recipient of one of his beautiful wild Atlantic salmon. And Jim he wouldn't tell which ponds you guys fished when you flew in the back country even if you didn't catch any fish. His lips were sealed in that regard.

As a golfer Kevin loved to play Men's Night and in tournaments. In fact he fell in love with the Annual Grande Meadows Invitational golf tournament and played it for the last 11 years in a row. He wouldn't miss it for anything. Sometimes he complained a little of a sore arm or shoulder or a bad knee but we would just kid him that he was making excuses. Sometimes he would come with different tapes on his hands or arms to help him manage.

When playing golf with Kevin you never knew what to expect because something different would happen every round. He could shoot the lights out with a 39 on the front 9 and then shoot a 61 on the back 9. Some days he couldn't miss while others he couldn't hit. But he took it all in stride – he never complained – he just laughed it off!

His long time playing buddy John Bugden remembers that Kevin rarely took a drop if he hit his tee shot in the hazard somewhere. If he could see the ball he was going to try and hit it back to the fairway.

Playing buddy Edmund Antle remembers Kevin always try to cut, fade or draw the ball. He was famous for hitting the driver off the deck as well as attempting the Phil Mickelson flop shot which ordinarily would turn out to be a bad idea. However, Edmund do remember the shot Kevin made for eagle on Hole #2 where he can be seen in the photo to the left retrieving his ball from the hole. The photo was taken by Chad Antle who was playing with Kevin, John and Edmund that day 5 years ago.

He had this old club he called his “mashie” which he would hit sometimes and he could hit it well. But every year it was a different color – he would paint it over the winter in whatever color of paint was available and proudly show off his “old mashie” come spring.

There is an old saying “When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.” That saying certainly reflects how the gang at the golf course feel about Kevin. He was loved by all of us and we have many great memories of him that we will treasure forever. I'm sure we will relate those memories of Kevin during our Men's Nights and tournaments for years to come and he will be forever in our hearts. He may be gone but he won't be forgotten.

I'm sure Kevin has already gotten together with Jerry Adams and they are holding court while making others smile in a much happier place without any suffering.

On behalf of the membership at Grande Meadows Golf Course I extend sincerest condolences to Kevin's wife Gayanne, his sons Blake and Logan as well as Kevin's extended family. God Bless you all during this difficult time.

Rest in Peace Kevin!

AGM Update

Grande Meadows held its 2021 AGM on March 31. It was attended by over 25 members who heard reports from all committees chairpersons as well as Chairperson Keith Howse. Reports showed that even though we lost some money during the 2020 season due mostly to the Covid-19 pandemic there was an increase in the number of people who played golf at Grande Meadows last year. This bodes well for the future.

Membership Dues

Letters should go out to last year's membership in the near future soliciting your participation for the 2021 golf season. The Board of Directors is asking that members pay up the membership fees before the end of April in the hope that it will allow us to take advantage of some government funding. As an incentive for those who sign up before April 30 there will be a pass for 10 free starter buckets of range balls as well as a $10.00 Mulligan's Restaurant gift certificate. We look forward to your continued support.

If you were a member last year and haven't received your membership renewal letter from Grande Meadows please contact Kim via email at

Course & Clubhouse Opening

The budget for the 2021 season presented and passed by membership at the recent AGM is for an opening date of May 17. An early opening will mean an extra cost for workers that isn't budgeted for and will result in further losses for the course. With that in mind there has been some discussion to opening the course early. So we are soliciting members feedback to see if they are willing to pay a nominal fee to play golf for days prior to the May 17. Please pass along your thoughts to Chairperson Keith Howse at, Bill Lee at or Grande Meadows at

Friday, April 2 2021 - 2021 Annual General Meeting Report

Grande Meadows Golf Course

Annual General Meeting

The 2021 Grande Meadows AGM was held on Wednesday March 31 at Hotel Marystown with a good turnout of members.

Club Chairperson Keith Howse gave a report on the 2020 season which showed an increase in the number of golfers taking advantage of the good weather to play some golf despite the restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Howse noted the total number of rounds for the season increased by almost 37% over 2019. There was a slight increase in the number of regular members but a big increase in student, junior and Future Links golfers which bodes well for the future.

Finance Chairperson Barry Stacey's report showed an overall loss money on golf operations for the 2020 season despite the increase in the number of golfers. Stacey indicated that because of the Covid-19 restrictions including very limited access to the clubhouse for long periods along with a substantial decrease in the number of tournaments held led to a fairly significant decrease in revenue especially from the bar, kitchen and proshop which attributed to our course finishing the year in the red. However, Grande Meadows was able to access some federal government wage subsidy funding as well as some provincial government tourism funding which made up for the loss in golfing operations. As well Grande Meadows qualified for a $1,000.00 grant from Golf Canada to help with the purchase of PPE material and junior golf operations. Stacey also indicated that he believes that the increase in number of golfers should continue for this summer which if there are no further Covid outbreaks bodes well for a great golf season this summer.

Tournament Director Clayton Welsh's report indicated that there were only 7 tournaments held during the 2020 golf season which was down from a normal total of 28 tournaments per season. Again this was due to the Covid restrictions in place last year. Marketing & Junior Golf Director Stan McCarthy reported on some of the activities which were put in place to promote both programs last year. McCarthy also expressed his appreciation to all those who helped out with marketing the course and the successful Junior Golf program during the 2020 season.

Human Resources Director Jeannette Lundrigan reported that she was successful in obtaining a Community Healthy Living Grant of over $11,000 to be used for the purchase of plexiglass for all countertop surfaces, wall mounted hand sanitizers as well as some contactless trash cans. Also included was the purchase of 4 sets of junior golf clubs to be used by those young players who are unable to afford the cost of golf clubs. Lundrigan gave a big thank you to Carol Ann Haley, local MHA at the time who strongly advocated for the funding approval for Grande Meadows.

For the first time in a few years there was a couple of elections during the AGM including for the Board of Directors and Golf Captain. Special measures were put in place in order to allow each person present to vote.

The Board of Directors for the 2021 season include John Bugden, Keith Howse, Jeannette Lundrigan, Stan McCarthy, Barry Stacey, Clayton Welsh and newcomer Gus Keating. The first meeting for the new Board will be held Thursday April 8 at which times committees for the 2021 season will be elected. Mike Russell was re-elected Golf Captain for the 2021 golf season.
