New Atlantic Golf Championship Announced
The 2014 golf season will see the introduction of a new golf championship for the regions best competitive golfers. The four Provincial Golf Associations of Atlantic Canada announced today that the first annual Atlantic Golf Championship will take place at the Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck Nova Scotia next August 15th to 17th.
The Golf Associations of Newfoundland Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are collaborating to create a new regional championship that will be contested each August and will rotate annually throughout the four Atlantic Canadian Provinces.
The new Atlantic Golf Championship will see male and female golfers in amateur (under 40) mid-amateur (male 40-54 & female 40-49) and senior divisions (male 55+ and female 50+) compete for both provincial teams and individual titles.
Similar to the format used at national tournaments the Championship will include two rounds of team competition and one further round of individual competition. There will be no cut so all players will play the full tournament. Through an agreement with Golf Canada the winners of each division will receive an exemption into respective national championships for the following year. Golf Canada is also establishing a Legacy Program tied to the new Championship which will see up to 5 schools in the host community receive Golf in Schools kits .
The four Provincial Golf Associations created the Atlantic Championship to provide an opportunity for the region’s top golfers to compete against each other with the goal of developing a high quality championship that will provide growth and development opportunities for golfers, rules officials and volunteers throughout Atlantic Canada.
The team portion of the Championship is expected to generate a friendly rivalry between the four provinces. Teams in each division will be comprised of three players with two out of three scores counting each round. The provincial team with the most points at the end of the team portion of the competition will be awarded the Atlantic Championship Cup. Individual scores over the three days of competition will determine the champions of each division.
The Boards of the four Provincial Golf Associations are excited about the new Atlantic Golf Championship. They believe that it represents a new era in competitive golf in the region and that golfers throughout Atlantic Canada will be anxious to make their provincial team and to compete in a first-class tournament.
