James Mitchell

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is James1.jpgJames Mitchell of Winterland is fast becoming a great ambassador for Grande Meadows Golf Course. Introduced to the game of golf at an early age James has blossomed into an up and coming young golfer on the provincial scene. Besides taking part in the Grande Meadows Junior Golf Program this mature young man could be seen many days during the summer playing a round with some of the adults at the course. Mitchell, a very soft spoken young person has a very pleasant demeanour which serves him well playing golf which can play tricks with your mind at times.

James captured his third Junior Men’s Club Championship this year with a 2 day 18 hole total of 85. Kevin Power finished in second place with a score of 93 while Kelly Walsh and Noah Ryan finished in a tie for third 1 stroke behind Power with scores of 94. He also captured the Junior Club Championship in 2018 & 2019.
That little 4 year old who showed such an interest in hitting the ball is now a giant of a 15 year old young man standing just over 6′ tall. And he his hitting the ball a long ways off the tee. James’s mom Krista says he is addicted to golf – not a bad thing considering the other addictions out there. πŸ™‚ She added, β€œBeing able to participate in all the tournaments this summer and being invited to play a round of golf with so many of the adult golfers has been amazing.” James hopes to qualify to be invited to join the Golf NL Development Team next year which he would enjoy and would benefit his growth in the sport.
James has the full support of his parents and in 2019 he participated in his first provincials where he place last but left with the determination that he would play in another provincial tournament and not finish last! His determination paid off as at the Provincials this year at the Humber River Golf Course in Deer Lake with a tie for 2nd in the Bantam Division. James also participate in the Golf NL Telly Tour for Junior Golfers – a series of golf tournaments at various courses around the province. In 2021 he took part in 5 events (see below) throughout the summer competing in the Juvenile Division.

*. July 27 Gander Golf Course 6th Place
*. July 29. Pitcher’s Pond Golf Course 1st Place
* August 2 Glendenning Golf Course 3rd Place
*. August 3 The Wilds Golf Course 2nd Place
*. August 30 Terra Nova Golf Course 4th Place tie * Tely Tour Championship
James took part in just about every adult tournament at the course during the summer including the 2 day Annual GM Invitational, the Burin Peninsula Open and the Club Championship where he acquitted himself quite well playing with the adults. Over the course of the summer James improved his game by lowering his handicap from a 21 to a 17. His hard work and dedication has certainly paid off for the young golfer as he strives to improve his game.

James didn’t stop there as he capped off his summer by having his first every Hole-in-One during the opening round of the Club Championship when he aced the Par 3 twelfth hole on Saturday. He became only the second golfer in the 26 year history of the Club Championship to record a hole-in-one, the other being Leo Loder on the same hole on September 21, 2008. Mitchell used his 7 iron to ace the 160 yard hole while playing in a group with Bob Brenton and Dan Walsh while Al Lewis and Ben Grandy looked on. Congratulations James!
